When you go shopping at AEON Jusco, Tesco or Giant, which one would you use to put your groceries in? A trolley or a basket?
Let’s be real here. Most of us would automatically reach out for the trolley, right? I mean, why waste energy by carrying the items when you can just ‘push’ them?
Admittedly, carrying a basket around is not that big a deal, but it can also help your wallet. Here’s how:
A basket is more budget-friendly
The smaller your basket is, the less things you’ll buy. Meaning, if you use the bigger trolley, there will be extra space for things other than those you initially planned to buy. Most likely you’ll reach out for an additional snack or two simply because you can still carry it to the cashier counter.
With a basket, you can only fill it up with your essentials, and this should prevent you from exceeding your budget.
A basket nips impulsive purchases and temptations in the bud
Also, when you have a trolley while shopping, there’s a psychological need to fill it, says James Nuttall, a marketing specialist for Cuuver.com.
It comes from wanting to justify your decision for choosing such a large carrier for your shopping in the first place. As a result, you will feel like, “since I have such a big carrier, might as well just fill it up.” Yeah, but often times you would choose things you don’t even need.
It’s the same scenario with online shopping where there’s no limit to how much stuff your “cart” can carry. You are more tempted by deals and offers even though you don’t need them.
A basket gets heavy quicker
Naturally the more things you put into your basket, the heavier it gets and in turn the faster you want to get to the cashier counter.
With a trolley, most likely you will end up wandering up and down the aisles which can lead to you purchase unneeded things. On the contrary, a full basket will give you a hint that it’s time to head for the cashier counter and stop shopping.
So in conclusion, unless you can’t physically carry one, or you need to push a child around on the trolley while shopping, or you have a long list of groceries to buy, it’s best if you use a basket while grocery shopping.
