Being given the opportunity to sing the United States of America’s national anthem at sports events is a great glory for anyone at all. Even award-winning celebrities often feel overwhelmed by this honourable chance.
The Star Spangled Banner, USA’s anthem, has got only one tune obviously. So, celebrities tend to switch things up a bit when it is their turn to perform the song at massive events – just so it doesn’t get boring.
Of course, things could go either extremely well or horribly wrong. Well, for Fergie, it was the latter.
The NBA All-Star Games 2018 took place just over the Chinese New Year weekend. Many fans of the sports tuned in to watch the best of the best basketball players fight out for the top spot.
Epic programs such as the celebrity version of the All-Stars game and the Slam Dunk Contest constantly bring in viewers too as they provide something a bit different from the typical basketball games.
This year, it was none other than Fergie who opened the show by presenting her version of the Star Spangled Banner. Unfortunately, the audience found it appalling rather than pleasing to the ear.
Some people even went as far as to call it the worst rendition ever! #ouch
Celebrities who were visible on the camera during the Black Eyed Peas’ female member could be seen snickering and trying their best to hold their expressions but to no avail.
Roseanne Barr who previously held the title of having the worst performance also dissed Fergie as she tweeted,
“Who saw Fergie’s national anthem performance at the NBA All Star Game? I think mine was better low-key.”
Well, Fergie did explain that she wanted to go for something different to E! News.
“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem, and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA.
“I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
Yes, Fergie did give her best but perhaps this year’s NBA All-Star Games anthem will definitely be holding the worst rendition title for quite a while.
Watch Fergie’s cringe-worthy performance here if you can even bear to go through the whole thing.
