Just a few months ago they were embroiled in a controversy after a video went viral showing workers washing dishes in puddles of dirty water on the road.
After a temporary closure notice and a shutdown for renovation, Raj’s Banana Leaf in Bangsar opens to public today, with a slight twist.
Situated in the same location, it is no longer known as Raj’s Banana Leaf but has rebranded to RBL Banana Leaf.
According to news reports, RBL Banana Leaf in a statement said doors were now opened after passing inspections by the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) and the Food and Safety Division of the Health Ministry.
The restaurant informed that all staff members have also completed proper food handling course conducted by a trainer registered with the Health Ministry.
In May this year, Federal Territories Health Department’s Food Quality and Safety Department visited the premise to conduct a check after the video took Internet by storm.
In an immediate response to the video, Raj’s Banana Leaf at the time apologised via their Facebook page, saying the problem stemmed from new workers.
They said strict action had been taken against the staff members involved, assuring that such a thing would not happen again.
Subsequently, the Ministry of Health issued three notices of offence against the restaurant.
The notices under the Food Act 1983, were for failure to get anti-typhoid jabs and attend training for food handlers, failure to register the restaurant with the ministry and failure to maintain the premises and keep it free from pests.
Earlier this month, the company that owned Raj’s Banana Leaf was slapped with a RM5,000 fine by the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court over its failure to provide details of two of its foreign workers to the Labour Department, last January.
Magistrate Wong Chai Sia meted out the sentence against Intercompass Sdn Bhd, which was represented by its director Muhamad Rizal Abd Rahman, 40, after the latter pleaded guilty to the offences.
