Do You Know the History Behind These Iconic Yellow Boots?

In 1973, one of the first waterproof leather boots of its kind was introduced by the Abington Shoe Company. It incorporated premium full-grain nubuck leather, thick rubber lug soles and unprecedented craftsmanship, the yellow boot was an instant classic.

It was named the “Timberland.”

Eventually, Timberland became the name of the entire company. The boot was never intended to be a fashion icon. It was made for hardworking New Englanders, rugged terrain, and wet weather.

But by the mid-1980s, Timberland’s original waterproof boot started becoming popular throughout Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

In 1985, the boot became popular in Hong Kong with the rise of urban hip-hop style. Today, the boot and brand is recognized globally.

To mark their 45th anniversary, Timberland introduces a special collection of boots to celebrate the heritage of bootmaking. The collection features remixes of the iconic yellow boot—made with premium materials and expert craftsmanship.

Timberland completes the mix with low-profile chukkas, pull-on Chelsea styles, and Earthkeepers® versions made with eco-conscious materials. Each boot is remixed with sapphire highlights—a symbol of the 45th anniversary—making them distinctively unique and worthy of caring on a legacy.

If you didn’t already know, Timberland is a global leader in the design, manufacturing and marketing of premium footwear, apparel and accessories for the outdoor lifestyle.

Best known for its original yellow boot introduced in 1973, Timberland today outfits consumers from head-to-toe, with versatile collections that reflect the brand’s rich heritage of craftsmanship, function, and style.

Timberland markets lifestyle products under the Timberland ® and Timberland Boot Company ® brands, and industrial footwear and workwear under the Timberland PRO ® brand.

Its products are sold throughout the world in leading departmental and specialty stores, as well as company-owned retail locations and online.

Timberland’s dedication to making quality products is matched by an unwavering commitment to environmental and social responsibility – to make things better for its products, the outdoors, and communities around the globe.
