The famous Swedish furniture retailer has finally made its way to the northern part of the country in Batu Kawan. Its first day of opening drew in thousands of customers from all over Penang and other parts of the northern region.
This also marks the fourth IKEA store available in Malaysia with the other three stores located in Damansara, Cheras, and Tebrau. To date, IKEA has 427 stores worldwide.
With a store investment of RM650 million, the retail space spanning 470,146 square-feet is equipped with 49 Swedish inspired room sets; a supervised playground called småles; a Markethall; IKEA restaurant which sits 815; the IKEA Bistro; an IKEA Bakery and the Swedish Food Market.
The first day of operation sold over 32,000 pieces of the famous Swedish meatballs and more than 23,600 curry puffs to more than 20,000 customers who visited!
The unique IKEA shopping is now ready for 6.6 million customers in the area.
Store Manage of IKEA Batu Kawan, Pathmalingam Arumugam, said,
“The people of Penang and Northern Malaysia have been waiting f or their very own IKEA store. Today, the wait is over. We have finally made their wish a reality!
“With something to offer for every age and taste, a trip to IKEA Batu Kawan will be a fun day out for the entire family.”
The store is also built with sustainability features of 4,064 solar panels, energy recovery equipment, eco-friendly refrigerants, optimised air conditioning, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting and reuse, parking bays for eco-friendly vehicles, and WC flush that saves 50% of water compared to regular fitting.
The customers who come to celebrate the opening of IKEA Batu Kawan throughout the first weekend will enjoy many in-store activities for the entire family such as the IKEA photo booth, face painting, sustainability pledge and the appearance of IKEA’s mascot.
With the opening of the new store, there will also be exclusive opening offers for IKEA FAMILY members, food offers, limited edition Trishaw Captain canvas printing and meet and greet with Thomas Powell, the Trishaw Captain’s mural artist.
The northern IKEA fans will no longer have to travel far down south anymore to enjoy all the IKEA features which we have come to know and love.
Beyond its delectable treats, this store includes a wide of features for people of every age and taste. Indeed, a trip to IKEA Batu Kawan will be a fun day out for the entire family.
The Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow said in his opening speech at the launch,
“Five years ago, there was nothing here, they had to take a helicopter to come and look at the land, and today, because of this catalyst project, Batu Kawan will transform into a vibrant township”
IKEA Batu Kawan is definitely bound to make the Penang mainland an urban destination and activate Batu Kawan as a dynamic retail hot spot.
Located at 752, Persiaran Cassia Selatan 8, 14110 Bandar Cassia, the new IKEA store is accessible via major highways.
To accommodate IKEA fans, there are a total of 1955 parking bays available and a free 2-way shuttle bus which rides from Design Village to IKEA Batu Kawan is provided daily from 11:00am to 9:00pm.
