Najib’s Lawyers Quit Right Before Questioning by MACC

Sometimes, it is better to back down than to fight a battle that is far too difficult.

Perhaps two of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s lawyers realised this and decided to quit just before being questioned by MACC, Says reported.

The two legal counsels are Datuk Harpal Singh Grewal and M Athimulan. The former was spotted outside of Najib’s home in Jalan Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur on May 19th, 2018.

When spoken to Harpal, he explained that they were not fired but voluntarily resigned from serving the ex-Prime Minister.

He told Channel News Asia,

“We were not dismissed; we withdrew after tonight’s discussion.”

Now, Najib has hired a different team of attorneys instead. He looked for former solicitor-general Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden and six other lawyers.

Harpal said to the Malay Mail,

“Zainal has got his own team and he (Najib) prefers to work with that team.

“It’s no big deal, it happens in matters like this.”

However, it was shocking to learn that Harpal and Athimulan quit just a few hours before Najib’s turn in being questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Putrajaya today, May 22nd.

Regardless, Najib turned up anyways at 9.45am. The topic of interrogation is in regards to the 1MDB case.

Meanwhile, it took the Commercial Crime Investigations Department (CCID) officials 11 gruelling hours to count just 11 out of the 72 bags of cash seized from Najib’s unit Pavilion Residences.

26 bags of that cash were transported to CCID headquarters in Menara 238 at Jalan Tun Razak on May 21st for the counting to be done. It took 11 long hours for the policemen to calculate just 11 bags, Says wrote.

Aside from just counting the amount of money there, the CCID officials need to record each note’s serial number as well which is what makes the process extremely tedious.

The operation ended at 9pm yesterday and the cash which have been recorded were brought to Bank Negara Malaysia for safekeeping.

The remaining 15 bags were brought to the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman to be kept overnight. This morning, they were transported back to CCID HQ to resume counting.

Hopefully the truth will be unravelled soon.
