Breastfeeding is one of the most wonderful experiences a new mother can have after giving birth. Unfortunately, it can also be challenging.

Of course, every mother will try her best to meet the demands of her child, but in doing so, her nipples may hurt from being latched on or itch when they graze against clothing.

You’d think the pain would go away after a while but breastfeeding is an ongoing process. So you’ll keep feeling the pain unless you do something about it.

If you are going through this situation, what you need is a nipple balm that can help soothe the pain if applied after every feeding, and ensure a long-lasting breastfeeding relationship.

Commercial nursing creams are expensive, so why not make your own with simple ingredients and easy steps?

The recipe for all-natural balm below uses only three ingredients: coconut oil, cocoa butter and beeswax.

Edible coconut oil protects against thrush, an infection of the mouth and throat by a yeast-like fungus. It contains the same medium-chain fatty acids as breastmilk and is easily absorbed.

Cocoa butter is also edible and forms a protective barrier for the skin on your nipples. Ultimately, beeswax helps to solidify it all.

These ingredients are safe, so there is no need to clean the balm off before you nurse. Just rub a small amount on your soreness after every feeding, but make sure your skin is dry before putting it on.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tea spoon of beeswax
  • 2 tea spoons of cocoa butter
  • 3 tea spoons of coconut oil

Directions:

  1. Measure all ingredients and dump them straight away into a small saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over low heat and let it melt.
  3. Prepare a small jar or tin and pour the mixture into it.
  4. Let it cool and solidify completely before closing the jar or tin with its lid.
