BTS’ RM Stands for Ringgit Malaysia?

On November 13, 2017, BTS’ RM officially announced his name change. For years, he was known as Rap Monster but he felt that the name no longer embodies the type of music he wants to do in the future.

At that time, he said,

“When I was a trainee, I started calling myself Rap Monster because of a song I did. Then naturally, I just kept saying this was my stage name and it stuck.

“After promoting under this name for awhile, I realised my name was really long and the name Rap Monster wasn’t representative of the type of music I wanted to do in the future.”

From then on, the has been known as RM. However, it’s still a bit tough for people who often call him by his previous nickname.

Bandmate Jungkook recently accidentally called him Rap Mon during an episode of Vlive. It was a slip but it helped open up the topic as to what ‘RM’ stood for.

The members started throwing out random words starting with R and M such as Rap Master, Real Mother, Romance Master, etc.

This sparked a string of suggestions from fans.

One fan listed:

“RM could stand for:

Rich Man
Reach the Moon
Really Modest
Right Meaning
Reckless Man
Reading Master
Raise Myself
Rhythm/Rhyme Master
Ruthless Music
Right Mood
Really Moody
Rising Musician
Really Meticulous

Sorry but my best friend and I enjoyed finding those.”

However, Malaysians can agree that RM should say his name is Ringgit Malaysia. One local girl actually wrote,

“Rap Mon, I can’t call you RM because in Malaysia, RM stands for Ringgit Malaysia.”

Sounds like a good name right?
