National Geographic Earth Day Run to Combat Single-use Plastics

Humans are not the only ones living on planet Earth; we share the space with other species too like animals, sea creatures and plants.

In order to make the world liveable for all, we should play our parts in keeping the environment clean and also safe from unwanted plastic materials that end up going into the oceans and endangering the sea life.

Each year 9 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean, and Asia is responsible for more plastic waste leakage than the rest of the world combined!

Some estimates suggest that this plastic could remain in the marine environment for 450 years or longer and the problem keeps getting worse.

National Geographic celebrates Earth Day with a Planet or Plastic? themed Earth Day Run. Planet or Plastic? is a multiyear National Geographic initiative. The ultimate goal is to prevent 1 billion plastic items from reaching the ocean.

Doing so will not only benefit the thousands to potentially millions of marine animals that become entangled in, suffocated by, or ingest plastic every year, but will also contribute to the overall health of the planet’s marine ecosystems and all who rely upon them.

With Gamuda Land returning as the official partner for the second year, the 2019 run will take place on the 28th of April at the Gamuda Walk, Kota Kemuning.

Other supporting partners of the run include Fox Sports, Nivea Men, Touch ‘n Go, eWallet, Fitness First, Zero Waster Malaysia and more.

And for the first time ever this year’s Earth Day Run in Malaysia will introduce an exciting 2km running category exclusively for the Gamuda Parks Junior Rangers aged from 6 to 13 years old.

Senior Vice President and Territory Head, FOX Networks Group Malaysia and Singapore, Vineet Puri said,

“In support of Planet and Plastic? and in celebration of Earth Day, we’re asking runners in Asia to choose the planet.

“As a global movement dedicated to raising awareness of pollution, Earth Day is the perfect moment to bring environmental issues around climate change, plastic pollution and the health of marine life into the spotlight.

“Raising awareness of these critical issues through events such as the National Geographic Earth Day Run is key to kick-starting lasting change across the region.”

By taking the Planet or Plastic? pledge it shows that you are committed to reduce your use of single-use plastic and you will become a part of a global community working together to stem the tide of single-use plastic polluting the ocean and will continue to receive information and tips to help you in your efforts.

Let’s all together join the National Geographic Earth Day Run by signing up here at the official website and also take the Planet or Plastic? pledge to choose the planet over plastic!

Little efforts go a long way in saving the environment from plastic waste!
