Taking Virtual Reality to the Medical Field

Technology has very much advanced from the ancient age and today we are able to witness and have a hands-on experience of the technology that has been revolutionised throughout the years.

Virtual Reality (VR) is an all computer-generated experience which takes place in a stimulated situation. Gaming was the pioneer usage of VR that got a lot of good response and interest from the public.

But today, Surgeon Maki Sugimoto is taking this hot technology out of the world of gaming and into the medical field.

He has developed a system that uses precise 3D modelling of the patient’s internal organ to help plan surgical procedures which maximises safety.

This ground-breaking technology is also revolutionising the way young doctors are trained. This might be a better alternative to give hands-on experience for the future doctors too.

The magic behind how all of this will work in the industry will all be revealed in a segment named RISING by NHK World Japan.

RISING is NHK World Japan’s documentary series that profiles rising stars in various fields – inspiring people who are challenging conventional wisdom and leading the pack.

This week’s episode on Virtual Reality: Transforming the Future of Medicine – Medical Technology Pioneer, Maki Sugimoto will air on NHK World Japan on Thursday February 21st at 9:30 and reruns at 15:30, 18:30 and 3:30 (Friday, 22nd February).
